About Patrick Donald Gallery
Who is Patrick Donald?
Patrick Donald is an Irish fine art landscape and street photographer whose work is grounded in a deep appreciation for being human and for the landscapes we live within. Through his lens, the ordinary becomes quietly extraordinary, revealing moments that might otherwise slip by unnoticed.
Working primarily in black and white, Patrick is drawn to its ability to remove distraction and uncover mystery, curiosity, and emotional depth. This timeless approach invites a sense of wonder and gratitude, encouraging the viewer to slow down and be fully present.
At the heart of his practice is a belief in the quiet magic of everyday life. Whether capturing the rugged beauty of the Irish landscape or the fleeting gestures of street life, his work celebrates presence, connection, and the subtle metaphors found in natural, everyday moments.
What is the Patrick Donald Gallery?
The Patrick Donald Gallery used to be a physical gallery on Dawson Street in Dublin and it is now my online fine art photography gallery where I share the work I have created over a lifetime of exploring the Irish landscape and documenting everyday street life. I create hand signed limited edition prints produced to museum standard. My intention is to offer photographs that hold honesty calmness and a real sense of place so each piece becomes a lasting expression worth sharing.
What makes Patrick Donald’s photography of Ireland unique?
I use a straight photography approach which means I rely on natural light and minimal manipulation. My aim is to keep the work honest and to allow the landscape to speak for itself. I spend a lot of time waiting for the right atmosphere so the viewer can feel the true mood of the place in the final print.
Is Patrick Donald an award winning photographer?
Yes. I won the Royal Bank of Scotland Portrait Award in the RHA in 2008 and that same year my work appeared on the cover of the Irish Arts Review. It was only the second photograph ever used on the cover which was a lovely recognition of my work. I seldom enter competitions as I prefer not to be judged by the few but appreciated by the many.
The Art And The Craft
What is fine art photography?
Fine art photography is the creation of images with artistic intention rather than simple documentation. My focus is on composition light and emotion so the photograph carries a sense of meaning and a connection to the deeper nature of things.
What is straight photography?
Straight photography is a simple and reflective approach to reality where the scene is captured as it is using natural light and minimal post production. This approach keeps me connected to the moment as it was and preserves the integrity of the landscape or street scene that I have been drawn to.
Why does Patrick Donald work mainly in black and white?
Black and white reveals the textures shapes and emotional tone of the Irish landscape. Without colour there is a deeper sense of timelessness and atmosphere. The viewer can connect more easily with the feeling in the scene without the superficial layer of colour which I often feel distracts from the message.
Does Patrick Donald also create colour landscape photography?
Yes. While black and white is my main medium I offer selected scenes in colour when the moment or light calls for it. I often create a strong black and white base image and later introduce selective colour in Photoshop which sometimes works beautifully.
Collectors Guide
Are Patrick Donald’s prints limited edition?
Yes. Every fine art print is part of a limited edition. Each piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity confirming its edition number and provenance.
Are limited edition photography prints collectable?
Limited edition prints are highly collectable especially when the artist has a strong consistent body of work. I have been photographing professionally for over thirty years and all of my prints are created using archival materials which support long term value. Photography has great potential to be seen as valuable over time and time will tell.
What makes a fine art print valuable?
Value comes from the artist’s reputation the rarity of the edition and the quality of materials and process. I use museum grade papers pigment based inks and careful printing methods so each print has lasting integrity with the hope it becomes valuable to the owner.
How is authenticity guaranteed for a Patrick Donald print?
Every limited edition print I create is hand signed by me and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This certificate includes the edition number title and confirmation that the print was produced in my studio using professional grade materials. My signature and the controlled edition numbers ensure the integrity and provenance of every piece and each original print is produced in my studio in Kilkenny.
What happens when a limited edition sells out?
Once a limited edition has sold out it is finished forever and I do not print it again. This protects the value and rarity of the work for collectors. In some cases a particular production type such as Acrylic may have its own limited edition. When that specific finish sells out the image can still be ordered in another format such as a traditional framed print. These are clearly marked as their own editions.
Does Patrick Donald ever re issue older photographs?
No. When a limited edition is complete I never re issue or recreate the photograph in another edition. I believe in honouring collectors who support my work. Occasionally I may revisit a location years later but each photograph stands on its own and editions are never repeated.
Is buying a Patrick Donald print considered an investment?
Many people collect fine art photography for both emotional and long term value. I see my work as something that holds meaning first and foremost and if a print grows in value over time that is simply an added gift. I create every piece with the intention that it can be appreciated for generations which is at the true heart of any art.
Does Patrick Donald offer custom sizes or commissions?
Yes. If you have a particular space or vision in mind I am happy to discuss custom sizes or commissioned work when appropriate. My aim is always to help you find a piece that feels right for your home or project.
Framing and Presentation

Yes. I offer wooden frames in black or white made with conservation materials to ensure long term protection. Each frame is chosen to complement the photograph and suit a range of interior styles. I prefer frames that are simple so they do not overpower the artwork.
Can customers buy framed prints of Ireland online?
Yes. All the Irish landscape prints on my website can be ordered framed and ready to hang. Great care is taken to ensure safe carriage so the framed piece arrives in perfect condition.
How should a framed fine art print be cared for?
Keep it out of direct sunlight if possible and away from damp areas. A gentle dusting of the frame now and then is all that is needed.
Are your printing and framing materials environmentally responsible?

Artist Background and Ethos
What inspires Patrick Donald’s photography?
I am inspired by the quiet beauty of everyday life and the gentle rhythm of the Irish landscape. My aim is to create work that uplifts the viewer and offers a moment of calm and clarity.
Who is Patrick Donald’s inspiration?
Over three decades of being a photographer I have been influenced by many of the greats such as Cartier Bresson Edward Weston Ansel Adams and Paul Strand. Each of them has offered a unique perspective that has gently encouraged me to produce my own original work. I hope that in time my photographs might speak in some small way to other up and coming fine art photographers. Their legacy and the quality of their work continue to stand the test of time and they will no doubt influence many more who have the good fortune to recognise their vision.
What photographic gear does Patrick Donald use?
I mainly use Nikon digital cameras and prefer a simple one camera one lens approach so I can stay present with the moment. For street photography I also use a medium format Rolleiflex twin lens reflex camera which allows me to work in a natural and unobtrusive way.
What is Patrick Donald’s favourite landscape photograph?
It is never easy to choose because I enjoy creating new work and each photograph holds its own meaning. If I had to pick one that speaks strongly to me now it would be Dingle Peninsula Slea Head Co Kerry. This magical place has a magnetic pull and I return to it regularly. When I arrive without expectation and simply allow myself to be present the landscape reveals itself. That photograph holds a piece of that experience and reflects the ethereal and mystical nature of Coumeenole Beach and the surrounding islands on the edge of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way.
What is Patrick Donald’s favourite street photograph?
My clear favourite for now is Spancil Hill Horse Fair which I made in 1996 during the early days of my career. I used a Minolta X300 with a 50mm lens and black and white film. The moment I captured between two men in conversation required quiet timing and a bit of stealth. Years later their relatives saw the print in my Dawson Street gallery and were deeply moved because both men had since passed. It reminded me of what photography does best. It preserves stories friendships and the simple truths that make everyday life so worthwhile.
How should I store an unframed print before framing?
If you are not framing your print immediately keep it in its protective sleeve or tissue paper inside the shipping tube and store it in a dry room away from heat. Avoid touching the print surface with bare hands. Your framer can safely uncurl and mount the print when you are ready.
Do you offer prints with personalised inscriptions?
Yes. If you would like a short personalised inscription under the image which will be visible when framed please contact me with your request at gallery@patrickdonald.com.
