My Photographic take on what lies beneath the material that is seemingly in the pictures I make….
We live in an age of addition. More content. More noise. More distraction. And in all this excess, we’ve forgotten something essential: that creativity is not about generating, but about receiving and becoming one with.
The source exists around us, waiting to be noticed by those patient enough to listen and tune into it.
When I stand before a landscape, I’m not deciding what it should be. I’m becoming attentive enough to see what it already is. The light that shaped the hills, the weather that carved the cliffs, the aliveness that moves through everything, all of it is broadcasting constantly. We may not be slowing down enough to listen to the birds singing and the presence of nature that is so much a part of our fabric of being human. We’re quite often too busy transmitting, too caught up in our own narrative of the mind, too distracted by the screens that promise connection but deliver fragmentation.
Photography, when successful in my experience, is a form of channelling and focusing on what is actually worthwhile through the eyes and vision of the photographer. It’s the removal of everything unnecessary so that what remains resonates with some kind of truth from the perspective of the viewer. It’s about stripping away ego, leaving only what is essential, authentic and real, and in essence allowing something greater to be felt.
When you live in the awareness and presence of the heart, something shifts. You notice what others may miss. A shaft of light. The geometry of a building. The way weather moves across a landscape. These aren’t your discoveries, they’re invitations. The world is showing you where to look and how to be in the moment.
When you hang a framed Patrick Donald photograph on your wall, its purpose is twofold: to remind you of the beautiful landscapes of Ireland and to reintroduce you to the source and essence of life. An invitation to step away from the chasing and into direct contact with your imagination and wonder of existence itself. It reminds you to walk outside, to be aware and present, ready to receive the great outdoors and nature that you are best suited to thrive in.
The secret source isn’t secret at all. It’s everywhere. It’s always been there. We just forgot how to listen and be in its presence. Let’s look after and rekindle a healthy relationship to the landscape and natural world that is vital to our ability to thrive and maybe even survive. The source of all things!!
Peace & Love
